JET program(me) is not just an exchange program for cultural exchange and english teaching but a community you are linked to for the rest of your life.

We are thankful and amazed at the expertise and experiences of those who shared their knowledge. Thank you Helen Cao our departing liaison officer plus food connoisseur. We had amazing food, wonderful people, and most of all the magical stories of Japan and the Jet Programme that keep us all connected.

In October, spring arrived a bit hesitantly and we had to postpone our event by a week but it was worth the wait! The trees were in full bloom and it was just a sea of pink amongst a gorgeous blue sky, with throngs of Aucklanders gathered amongst the branches trying to snap their annual pic.

10 years after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. A cappella group - @kingoftinyroom , students from Fukushima University suffered from the disaster.
As they're closely connected to Fukushima, they decided to carry out this remote project - "Virtual Choir Project : Hana ha Saku", which is a song created for restoration assistance following the Great East Japan earthquake. They will be donating the money they receive from YouTube advertising revenue to Tohoku Area.

Our first post lockdown outing was to check out a travelling contemporary netsuke exhibition at the @te_uru_gallery in Titirangi!

¿Did you know?
As kimono culture flourished during the Edo period (1603-1868), netsuke, small carvings, were created as toggles to hold pouches and cases containing tobacco and medicine in place on the obi sash worn with the kimono.
What began as functional pieces to prevent those little suspended containers from falling to the ground evolved into small but highly creative carvings.

The traveling exhibition showcases contemporary netsuke carved of wood by living netsuke craftsmen in Japan, plus netsuke created by contemporary artists such as Izumi Kato.

These small, wood-carved pieces feature incredible detail and hidden quirks, with many taking inspiration from popular Japanese themes.

One of only around 20 Japan Foundation travelling exhibitions around the world so worth checking out between 27th June till 2nd August!!

Whitney here, your treasurer for the 2020-2021 year. I was placed in a wee skiing town called Kami-cho, in the frozen north of Hyogo Prefecture, from 2011-2014.

Sad to say that lockdown has prevented us from spending much money, so our committee will be sure to make some really special events when it is safe to do so. I’ve been keeping busy during lockdown by going in to work for a GP clinic and keeping the flourishing mind of a toddler entertained and stimulated. Good stuff!

It’s already been more than five years since I’ve finished JET, but it’s truly an unforgettable experience. Perhaps my highlight was getting third place in our town’s yukigassen (snowball fight tournament) on my last year.

What are your unusual accomplishments in Japan? Have you played yukigassen before? I’m also heading up our initiative for team events, so let me know if you have any suggestions.
